Artificial intelligence (AI) is profoundly transforming the legal profession, opening up new opportunities in areas such as automating legal research, assisted drafting of documents, and optimizing workflows. AI technologies are capable of increasing efficiency, reducing time, and improving accuracy in many daily tasks of law firms. However, these innovations also bring significant challenges, particularly regarding the ethical aspects of the profession.

In an interview with ItaliaOggi, Francesco Biazzo emphasized that human oversight remains essential even in the era of AI. Biazzo highlighted the importance of a conscious approach to managing AI, especially in relation to transparency with clients and professional accountability.

„The concerns about using AI can be mitigated through the educational and training support that some professional organizations have already started providing, particularly concerning the ethical aspects,“ explained Biazzo. A significant example of this approach is the adoption of the first Charter of Principles by the Order of Milan, which establishes clear guidelines for the conscious use of AI in the legal field. The Charter emphasizes that lawyers must use AI with transparency, assuming full responsibility toward their clients.

Additionally, the Charter reiterates that AI cannot replace the intellectual work of the professional and their duty of care, values on which the client rightfully relies. It is essential to ensure the centrality of human judgment, cybersecurity, and data privacy, principles that remain fundamental in the legal profession.

Therefore, the adoption of AI is not merely a technological issue but also requires a strong ethical commitment from legal professionals. In this rapidly evolving context, the challenge will be to integrate these new technologies without compromising the core principles that govern the practice of law.
