On February 17th, the Digital Services Act came into effect across Europe. This legislative package introduces new rules for the web, setting new safety standards and stringent transparency regulations.
From major operators, such as search engines and social networks, to online platforms and marketplaces, down to individual users, everyone must pay attention to the new rules implemented within the European Community.
The goal of the Digital Act is to protect digital users, including those under 18, ensuring a high level of privacy, safety, and security.
According to Aurora Agostini, interviewed by Verità&Affari on the subject, „The regulation marks a decisive step in the regulation of online advertising, aiming to create a balance between commercial dynamics and consumer protection. Before the Regulation, there was no harmonized approach specific to the transparency of online advertising or the management of risks associated with harmful advertising practices, such as excessively invasive targeting or misinformation. The digital context is thus enriched with rules aimed at safeguarding the integrity and security of the market: with this new regulation, users should benefit from greater control over their data and how it is used in the advertising context, and companies, in turn, will be driven to revise their marketing strategies, prioritizing transparency and fairness.
