Residence by investment: how it works in Italy and Portugal

In recent years, investor visas have become increasingly strategic tools for attracting international capital and talent.

In this context, countries such as Portugal, as early as 2012, and Italy, since 2017, have introduced specific residence by investment schemes. These programs allow non-EU citizens to obtain a residence permit through qualifying investments, with the possibility of accessing long-term residence or citizenship over time.

While pursuing similar objectives, the two models present significant differences, particularly in terms of structure, timing, and tax aspects.
